Josi... Here is a check list with which to start.
Normally I wouldn't go into such things, but as I have always thought of you as quite genuine, and someone like myself; a free spirit* sort, who came to this because you love sex [and what better way to make a living then by doing something you love], let me run down some thoughts for you.
1) Get yourself a prepaid cellphone under an assumed name. Use ONLY calling cards purchased with cash to pay for the minutes for that phone. If at any time the phone number appears "hot", give the phone a good wipe and toss it in the trash. Then get yourself anyother phone with a different number.
2) Get yourself a secure e*m*a*i*l account with a company like 'Hush-Mail". Use only the free version. Never a paid account. You'd have to use a credit card and that is directly tracable back to you.
Access this account from your computer ONLY by means of an anonymous proxy server [so that no logs are created at the site of the web-based ****** client that show your personal IP address].
3) Do any business over that phone line and that e*m*a*i*l address ONLY.
4) Do incall based ONLY out of hotels. Vary them.
5) Make sure these hotels have sufficent traffic. People are wrong when they say they don't like to deal with intermediate and high traffic hotels. Hotels with minimal traffic allow all manner of folks to take note of the small amount of comings and goings. A high traffic hotel, when entrance and exit is made discreetly, is simply one more person coming or going. Nothing special of which to take note.
5) At the same time make sure that the hotel in question isn't one with "morality police officers". Some hotels consider themselves "family hotels". They train their people, specifically, to be on guard for traffic of an "adult" nature.
Hotels that advertise their family type atmospheres are chiefly among these. An Embassy Suites near an airport, tailored for business type traffic, would be a better choice then a Holiday Inn near a family resort area for instance. If you lack specific knowledge about how to tell the difference stick to hotels around airports and convention centers [like the ones in Edison, or Secaucus].
If you have to use motels, the "no-tell's" are the best. There business depends on short-stays and they make a point of NOT taking notice of comings and goings. But its hard to find one that is both totally discreet and provides a high level of service [ready access to clean towels and bedding, etc.]. It might be advisable to pack some of your own. This not only gives the tools you need to see folks in an atmosphere that promotes return business and makes you feel comfortable, but also provides for some luggage to carry in with you to make your stay appear more conventional.
6) Client screening: Maintain a reasonable level of client screening. You work from the boards, so to some degree you can work with that. Someone contacting you IRL, who drops a board name on you, should have some idea about the things you have discussed directly on the board. If not, assume it isn't that person. Referrals from other providers, known to you from your correspondence here and other contact.
Call back numbers [though this won't work with johns who use the same methodology I have described above for you, as providers aren't the only ones with throw away phones now-days].
You can request some form of real documentation prior to seeing someone but know that it will lead to: 1) either someone presenting to you phony ID, which is worse then useless for what you are trying to achieve; or 2) greatly deminish the number of clients who might call on you because johns, rightly or wrongly, don't like the idea of providers knowing their real telephone numbers, address, real names, etc. It makes some of them feel a tad too "naked", and therefore, vunerable.
So, ideally, a means that is both effective and as unobtrusive to the john as possible meets the need. As I have noted, the best of these is referrals from people who have already seen this man, and know him. Second best would be a double call back system where the person calls you from a payphone in view of your hotel window, where you can size him up before he knocks on your door. That, and the acquisition of a good antenna for BS are your best allies.
Note to Cat_Ballou, and those like her working out of what is probably an apartment in the city. Some of these things apply to you as well. However, if you do small amounts of traffic [one or two callers a day] and make their comings and goings as discreet as possible, you can usually get away with this in Manhattan.
These are a few tips. Don't ask me how I know these things, and I won't bother to fib in response.
With the acquiring of a good "third eye" to watch for problems, and the application of common sense security there is no reason you can't conduct business in a relatively safe** and practical manner.
I wish you luck, success, and no more hassels.

* What "JL" use to refer to as my "swashbucker" side is born in this. However, unfortunately, as we get older such free-spiritedness has to be balanced with common-sense and we can't play it as loose and breezy as we once did. You are learning that now.
** Relative to the fact that what is taking place is, after all, illegal under the laws of most states.
