Hindsight is always 20-20.
He wasn't a .188 hitter when Cashman gave him the contract. He was coming off a year where he hit 27 homers and 79 RBI. He was also a great defender.

Classic case of a player working hard to put up good numbers to make big bucks only to become less hungry with production suffering .

Still alot based on one half way decent season, that he hit .248. Never had those power numbers before that contract and has done dick since the deal. It was a bad one.

I believe their thinking at the time was they got a former first round pick for a catching prospect. ( BTW Murphy is no longer in baseball).
At the time it looked like a good deal for us. We got a switch hitting 26 year old center fielder to replace elsburry.

The problem was that extension and There wasn't a lot of CF options going into the next couple of off seasons.

Side note. Im curious how much money Cashman has eaten in players that got released during their contracts.

So the ..248 average and 79 RBI season warranted a 7 year extension? Lol Don't even think he accumulated 100 rbi in the 7 years.
