The Smiths; and other musical favorites and opinions of aging mongers

The voice reminds me of Petty, not so much the musical style. No edge to it.
I agree. But, at least they are trying.

But, I get your point.

And, please indulge me, if I might quote one of the greats of our era, a legend by the name of Mr. Bob Seger:

“Call me a relic, call me what you will
Say I'm old fashioned, say I'm over the hill
Today's music ain't got the same soul
I like that old time rock and roll…”

Bad Company and Foreigner and Judas Priest need to go in first
Meat Loaf was a heavy-hitter and a unique class-act. And when Bat Out Of Hell hit the airwaves, in 1977, it absolutely dominated our collective-consciousness.

He was quite impactful on the culture. And, he was such an oddball for the time. Being an overweight rockstar was not what we were used to. He looked like an offensive lineman.

Also, “Paradise By The Dashboard Lights” with Phil Rizzuto calling the play-by-play, synched in perfectly with the Yankees winning the World Series that year.

Gotta put the guy in there. Sad he couldn’t be alive to enjoy it.

Two hits shouldn’t get you in. Imho

(Now that I've Rambled I came back to the top to apologize if this is too long. But Hey you can always skip it)
Wow I had a TOTALLY Different purpose for seeking out an alternative thread that was techno/video relative. To pose a query of my brethren. AND THEN THIS THREAD!
Lot's of great memories, insights and good vibes.

What's old is New and Old again
What's new is Old & New again.
There is no sound that wasn't heard
by man or beast or even bird.
Our world creates a melody
that all can hear, And some can See.
But in the end we must agree.
Since the dawn of time at the time of dawn
From the earth & stars these chords are born
From fairy light to loud bombast
They never die, yet everlast
From soft and quiet sighs and moans
to deep and painful gutteral groans
Theres nothing new, the die is cast
They never die, yet everlast.
With clarity that's rarely compromised.
They're Simply metamorphasized
By those who oft feel ostracized
Blended but still recognized
And in the blended mixture found
the New Old, Same old Wondrous Sound.

I would submit that those of us of an older age.
Let our minds, and souls engage
With Newer things, not of our time.
Seek the newer melody & rhyme
We will find a strange yet common ground.
When we realize,.. sound is Sound

And to those of us with freshened skin
You may want to just begin.
By going back in place & time
Seek an older melody & rhyme
You will find a strange yet common ground.
When you realize, ..sound is Sound

And in ALL the blended mixtures found
the New Old, Same old Wondrous Sound.

I was personally influenced & enjoyed music from the 40s until now. & Yes I mean now. I enjoy a LOT of current Artists while
genreationally(mispelled with a purpose) my wheelhouse is 70s Rock n Roll. Maybe even late 60's.
I believe listening to music can be whatever you want it to be when you want it to be. When I want to remember my youth, of course I listen to MY Genreation. I think, while you "like what you like". (and this is not meant to be critical) That when you limit yourself to only a handful of genres & or eras. You are quite possibly allowing the "Music" to choose You. As opposed to You choosing the Music. Seek the common chord in everything Old & NEW. Choose the music with a purpose.
To Reminisce
To Work out
To Dance
To relax

To drive
To be in the background
To Wake me the Fuck Up!
To engage
To withdraw
To Wallow
To Awaken
To Delight in
To Wonder
To Explore

So alas i'll leave you witha quote from one of my Fav's

This garden universe vibrates complete
Some, we get a sound so sweet
Vibrations reach on up to become light
And then through gamma, out of sight
Between the eyes and ears there lie
The sounds of color and the light of a sigh
And to hear the sun, what a thing to believe
But it's all around if we could but perceive
To know ultra-violet, infra-red, and x-rays
Beauty to find in so many ways
Two notes of the chord, that's our full scope
But to reach the chord is our life's hope
And to name the chord is important to some
So they give it a word, and the word is ....OHMmmmmmmmmmm

In more direct relation to this thread title. While I was never interested in the Smiths, Morissey et al. at the time of their height. I took a listen to about a dozen songs. It served a purpose(To Explore) and while a good listen. I was not overwhelmed.

What baffles me, is that waking up early this morning, I found myself for some reason, and not recently hearing The Moody Blues, pondering your last quoted poem by Graeme Edge.

I googled him. He recently died on November 11, 2021, at the age of 80. An amazing personality and an amazing drummer. RIP

I've never really paid much attention to them in the past, but since this thread posted have listened to a few songs and have enjoyed the listen. I can understand the mass appeal in Britain.

Tell that to Percy Sledge.
“When A Man Loves A Woman,” “sang” by Percy Sledge, can stop your heart from beating.

I had actually had a lesbian friend who used to sing that song to me. She used to break out in tears.

To me, that is a great testament to his greatness.

Not as prolific as many before and after him, but a ballad that no heart can escape.
