Which, as you and I know, it isn't.
I'm dumbfounded. All this time I thought you were a "wires" guy ( of course that does depend on what "significant" is ).

hvb,

If it's really just for fuck music, it probably really does make sense to simply buy a decent "mini-system" ( which there really are a bunch of these days ) as it does to try to find a good pair of wireless speakers.

Unless of course you want to listen to vinyl while fucking, which is tough anyway, and especially if the system is in another room and you have to travel to flip it.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo.

(I did go out and buy some Flatliners. But that was only so I could run wires under our livingroom carpet without causing my spouse to absent herself from my life.)

Slinky - I am all for a theoretical wireless speaker that sounds just as good as wired ones. I'll buy a couple pair tomorrow with the theoretical money I might make.

(I suppose you could use digital radio technology for the signal and a good monoblock/driver design and get it to sound pretty good. Eww digital.)

HvB - If you can't tell the difference in sound, then just go with the prettiest box.

Why not just put together an inexpensive (wired) bedroom system?

Or get youself a Henry Kloss table radio and a discman.

My problem in this realm is I know more about production gear than home gear...but in production gear I (and many) really like Genelec speakers which are powered. From an engineering point of view you can really optimize things when you get to design and couple both. They are "good" and relatively neutral (which not all studio monitors are)...

BUT studio monitors tend to be too beamy for home use...unless you are the sort who sets up "the chair" in the optimal sweet spot for serious listening...

If we are talking serious fuck-music here I would think a mini-system would be seriously lacking in the sub-woofer frequencies which have their own sensual virtues...

I don't know what "the best" is, but wireless speakers comes in three different types......

IR (Infra-red) - uses an infra-red signal (much like a remote control).....does not need line of site, as the IR signal can bounce off walls (i.e. point your VCR remote at the wall behind you and the signal will bounce forward and operate your VCR

Radio frequency - There are two different ones which will come in either 900 mHz (same frequency to most cordless phones) or 2.4 GHz (also used in cordless phones such as Siemens, VTech). The downside with 2.4 GHz is that it operates at the same frequency as wireless networks and your microwave oven. So neither the transmitter, nor the receiver, can be positioned within 8 feet of one of these, or else the signal will pop, hiss, and generally sound like crap. The 900 mHz may also experience interference, or cause interference with, your 900 mHz cordless phone.

HvB - my last post was crossposted with SB's post (and JL's implied ditto).

The Henry Kloss was a serious suggestion, it's small, cheap and sounds surprisingly good. Pair it with a cd player and I think you'd be golden.

Its been my default 'nice' gift for a few years now.

My own bedroom is equiped with an old Sony CMT-T1 (afaik, the first 'executive' mini system). It looks better than it sounds. (And now that I'm thinking about it, it has powered speakers).

SB - Was never a wire guy until I heard the 47 labs OFC cable kit (Which I'd be willing to bet is thinner than JL's flat cable).

Maybe the thing to get is one of those "home theater in a box" systems. They are relatively inexpensive, they usually have a sub-woofer of some kind so you can generate those *deep vibes*, and they can do a simulated surround sound thing so you can have 5 little speakers on the walls *all around the bed*. Just hook up your VCR and CD player and you are good to go.

Of course they have lots of wires which totally contradicts the initial point of this thread, but if we start to worry about things like that now...

(I have a Boston Acoustics one that was well under $1000 and sounds quite good I think...)

yes yes yes YES!

i've got cleats on the walls anyway. i could just hang the wires from them. (i just didn't want to run wire from the living room to the bed room.)

I'm just going to shut up now.

(NAD L40 & Triangle Comete bookshelves will trounce most things this side of $1000)

If you are really interested in a "fuck system", forego the subwoofer ( will annoy your neighbors anyway ), and strap a few of these or these or ( if you're on a budget ) even these to your box spring. You'll thank me later.

Meridian has made some truly excellent powered speakers, with their own built-in D/A converters, but I think the cost is way beyond what hvb is looking for.
