I think some of you are exaggerating the importance of porn as it relates to the prevailing styles of sex appeal.First of all,I guess by porn you are referring to what is the 2007 Vivid Video style of porn actress.
You're discounting all the rest, like Rob Black and his ilk, who i think have had a reasonable effect on both porn and guy's attitudes towards how they treat women in bed.

Honestly I don't watch this stuff and don't know exactly what is in vogue now.
But that puts you out of the norm, especially if you include "younger" males.

But styles change and porn is just a more extreme manifestation of what's going on in popular culture in general at any given moment. It is not the wellspring from which these stereoypes arise.Porn is as old as man and if you look at one of those artsy Taschen history of erotic image books you might look at it differently.
And as far back as then, a lot of "porn" was on the "instructional" end of the spectrum. What would you cal The Kamasutra?

In the late 70s the lobby of the beloved Harmony Theater was a place where Susaye London,Annette Heinz,Helen Madigan,Tiffany Clark,Kandi Barbour,Suzy Nero all hung out and smoked. There wasn't one tatoo, piercing, shaved bush, fake tit,or gym toned body among them. They all did porn.Porn star waif Tina Russell literally was my "girl next door " when I lived in Brooklyn in '79.In the early 80s the Video revolution hit at the same time Madonna brought downtown sensibilities to every mall with the help of MTV.The poularity of cosmetic surgery, botox, bodybuilding culture,post-AIDS reaction to the ennervated look, ink and piercing culture, bikini waxing, etc.have flowed toward the prevailing porn style rather than from it.
This only speaks to looks, not sex acts. And I'm not sure it's really dispositive of anything? it could be used as easily for proof of the oposite... it's neutral info.

I see hundreds of naked female bodies professionally each month
quit yer baggin'..... :p

and the difference between what I see on stage and what I see under civilian clothing seems to be decreasing. You could make the claim that it due to porn's influence, but I think porn is just one part of a multifactorial interactive culture machine. It's like the old high art/low art debate. Is Hollywood becoming more pornish,or vice versa?
I think this is too important a part of the argument to be as dismissive of it.

As a footnote,I was in a stripclub recently and noticed that only one of the dozen girls had the fullblown pneumatic 90s stripper look.I mentioned it to one of the other girls and she asked me what the Millenium stripper look was.I don't know but it seems to me that there is a trend back toward a more natural look.

just like in porn ;).

I thought I was braggin' not baggin'.

I don't disagree with anything you said.On the other hand it is impossible to "prove " the point of porn's effect either way.I just tend to think that porn like rock n'roll or the drug culture has had it's importance related to the decline of Western civilization overstated.

As I said I really don't see much porn anymore. Presuming you believe porn is at the vanguard of the sex trends that become more mainstream,is there anything specific changing now in the industry that you think may become a more general societal trend?Seriously.

Going back to Slinky Bender's mention of Suicide Girls, an interesting thing is that for a while they were having what appeared to be a professional alt porn studio (called Lithium Picnic) shoot maybe one of their sets each week. And I always hated those sets. Even though "alt", they were so much slicker than the typical SG set. And, to me, that ruined it. Cuz it looked too pro.

And when do these men see any sexual women (in their minds) outside of porn or a strip club?

PS Do you have your plane ticket yet? the 20th is just around the corner........
Well, that's true. I am certainly a very sexual person, but one would never think as much if they were to see me out running errands - sweatpants, unwashed hair, leave-me-alone-and-let-me-get-things-done attitude. The strip club transformation into the glammed-up, sexually charged, what-can-I-do-to-make-you-happy girl has always fascinated me. I think that the most detrimental contribution that porn and the sex industry in general has made to women's sex lives is this idea that we're at your service at any given time. There are plenty of times outside of working in the industry when I make my own voluntary transformation into the ready for sex girl (because I want to have sex and be MY idea of sexy), but the result is still such a far cry from what you'd see while I'm working - I don't even know that your average porn and stripclub indulged male would recognize it for what it is.

I was out dancing last night with some friends, and at one point these two generic "porn" girls walked into the club and started acting all pornish with eachother on the dance floor. This obviously induced an immediate pavlovian response from the drunk male crowd. The collective female eye rolling was almost defeaning.

PS - I unfortunately won't yet be in town on the 20th, I'm so bummed. :(

What the porned out girls probably don't get is that their simulated lesbo sex is an excuse for guys to make noise for each other and bond in our stupidity. We like this and it's acceptable only in situations like spectator sports and watching girls get it on in public. But unlike watching a buzzer beating shot, which has intrinsic value as resolution of suspense, and then giving some hairy stranger a chest bump and watching his uvula up close while he screams in your face, the whooping at girls grinding is pleasure for it's own sake.If the girls think it's about them and get some ego gratification from it that's fine, but it's fortuitous.

After killing time at a bar on Carmine Street last night watching a buzzer beating oppurtunity go down the drain on TV,I went to see "Exterminating Angels".I was fully aware that it would be a pretentious, self indulgent, self reflexive exercise in examining issues of porn, sexual transgression on film, the gaze of the male and female sexuality. As a sophisticated perv though,I was hoping to be titillated while scoffing at it.Some of the sex scenes looked great, but despite 3 cups of coffee I nodded off twice and the only twinge in my crotch came when I nodded the second time and my Coke slipped out of my hand and hit me in the balls.

There is some humor in it though. One actress' "vamp dance" at an audition is embarrassingly, painfully funny.I also found it disturbing but amusing that after finding actresses who could reveal their 'real' sexuality on film, the director replaces one of them with a pro porn actress who does 'remarkably well',after the original girl's psychosis and history of sexual abuse culminate in her breakdown on the day of the shoot.

Gratuitous perv point:

Photo of two french chicks jerking off under the table in a restaurant right across the street from a hot sheet hotel. The one on the left,Charlotte, is nuts (but has great tits.)

This is not a candid photo from one of jl's dates

the trailer certainly made it look that way.

and you couldn't even go for fried chicken afterwards.
Actually,I got shut out of the show I intended to go to,and then to add injury to insult had to look at the 'closed by order of DOH 'signs. That's why I wound up in a bar eatin' chicken and watching college hoops.

I recently met a working girl in a non-working social setting. I'd never seen her before, although I'd seen her website.

Her website had very tasteful professional glamor shots, but they were all (as I remember) of a sexual nature. They all showed her in various states of undress and in various states of preparedness for sexual activities (and maybe a few of recumbence from sexual activity). But to me they seemed very studied and also pretty cliched. They didn't do a thing for me at all.

So I met her. She was this very attractive woman, wearing normal going-out clothes, with twinkling eyes (although that was probably because she had her glasses off and couldn't see) and a cute, hugely appealing smile. I found her so much more appealing than the pictures on her website. If her website pictures had shown the woman I met, I'd have gone apeshit.

Now I understand that perhaps I'm not typical. Maybe I'm even in deep denial over being a john; I don't know. But I can't believe that I'm so unique that I don't at least constitute a niche. And somebody ought to be going after it.

This observation is sort of like every positive review one has ever read in which the proverbial "she looked much better than her pictures" line is used.

(Yes, I know why it's really different -- your saying that she looked better "real" than tricked out/slutted out in her porno attire, make up and attitude. But, again, there's a huge difference between starting into the eyes of a model in a photo and staring into the eyes of a real, live person. It goes to the core of why we hobby.)

A couple of quick observations on porn's influence of mainstream sexual practices:

Explosion of cosmstic plastic surgery industry - certainly one huge contributing factor in the rapid expansion of this industry are the bionic women-like models currently favored in porn. And part of this is the impression many women have that this is the type of "look" men are attracted to

Mainstreaming of anal sex - I've read that anal sex Internet porn has heavily influenced sexual practices among younger teens and 20-somethings (now I'm really showing my age), despite the prevalence of AIDS and other factors that, you would think, would act as a counterweight

The other thing to say about this woman is maybe she's even misrepresenting herself. I don't know what she's like in session, which of course could change everything. But I can't help wondering if the guys who go for the sexbot (albeit a very tasteful high-class type sexbot) portrayed on her website are really going to want the cute perky girl-next-door who shows up. Whereas there are lots of guys (I think) who'd love to find a cute perky girl-next-door.

But you said you saw her in a social setting. How do you know that, when she shows up, she doesn't show up as the "sexbot" as opposed to the "girl next door"?

Also, how much can/do prostitutes change the way they look/act when on the job? (A much bigger question, I understand.) (I'm talking about extended outcalls, not hour-long brothel sessions.)

It's a great subject for another thread. If you start it, I'll respond. But, mostly, I'd love to hear what some of the providers have to say on the subject.

I just found this piece of advice regarding porn on a BDSM blog and since it relates directly to our discussion, I thought I would share it:

"Porn - for better or worse - is not reality: understand what real life people are saying not what you want to hear. Then you can enjoy both porn and reality."

Here's the link to the blog, if anyone's interested (it's mildly interesting/entertaining): http://www.downonmyknees.com/

Here's a pictorial for a fetish-wear site that uses some nudity but is just simply hot. It might be my particular taste, but this Chech model is just one of the most beautiful women I've seen in years. Yet, I looked her up on the Web and there are several other pictorials that aren't nearly as interesting or well-shot. So am I responding to her beauty, or the photographer's vision? And what does that say about the way in which we respond to the photo galleries on provider sites?
