NY Decriminalization? Coud it happen?

While a big part of me doesn't see this ever happening, the logical capitalist in me says the lawmakers who love their pockets lined could easily make this happen. Look at the projected revenue from marijuana once its fully legalized. An estimated 4 billion in revenue in the 1st year is astronomical but like anything else, once the novelty wears off those numbers will steadily decline and level off somewhere in the 500 million-1 billion dollar amount... Prostitution, however, is a market that will never decline. As long as there are fine looking women willing to have sex for money, there will be a man willing to pay her. While the price of the avg hh will most certainly increase by every provider, think of the constant flow of cash coming in to the city/state/county. Naturally it will be squandered by govt officials but thats well above my pay grade. My concern with it all is that i would no longer be searching web pages and hoping that it pans out, rather I'd be able to walk into a regulated sex parlor and get what i want when I want it and leave with no fear or reprisal. Ahhhhhh that would be masterful wouldn't it???? But let's come back down to planet earth now. It just doesnt seem like this will ever happen!

While I agree with all of you-we never thought they would legalize pot either-and if they figure out where to put it-like in Amsterdam-with what was said above about money-and votes-I can see it

I would be shocked. The religious groups are too strong. Even in blue state, liberal New York.

When the porn industry wanted to have an annual convention in Manhattan, they got denied. The closest they could get approved is Edison, NJ. About 45 minutes away.

If they legalize and keep it in one location, how would you explain to your SOs why you were there - in case of a parking or speeding ticket, for example?

Thought I would chime in here since there is a lot of misconception.

NY is considering decriminalization not legalization. There is a difference. Legalization would mean that the profession could be licensed and taxed. Look to a well known state out west. Decriminalization means prostitution will still be illegal. The police would just not enforce it. Keep in mind that they could still arrest the customers under decriminalization. There are two things driving this.

Some people feel that trafficked women do not come forward because they fear being arrested. Once the threat of arrest in removed then trafficked women can come forward to report abuse without fear of arrest.

The LGBT community has recently taken the ALT community under it's wing. The ALT community includes people who make their living providing BDSM services. The LGBT community is making a big push to decriminalization sex work.

10 years ago I dated a woman in the ALT world. There are many ALT groups in NY and some of them meet once a month to discuss the current issues in the lifestyle. STD testing, keeping yourself safe and legal issues. Decriminalization was talked about back then. This has been a long time coming, it's only now that the vanilla world is hearing about it.

Oh for sure, I can imagine the 'custom cabinetry' that those establishments will need ... lol!

In the present climate I could see providing sex for remuneration being legalized, but the paying for sex made lnto a more serious offense. Probably have some sort of local option like Nevada, and then the price would go up instead of down. On the other hand, think of all the bookkeepers and accountants that would get new accounts. Job creation!

Read the article closer. It did not legalize prostitution or even decriminalize it.

All they did was repeal a 1976 law that was essentially "stop and frisk" for SW. Prostitution is still illegal, for now. All that changed is that LE can not hassle SW for loitering.

But there are proposals pending that would decriminalize the selling of sex, but not the buying.
