You want to blur labor laws so as to open yourself up liabilities?
Just curious — what labor laws and what liabilities?
My cleaning lady is an independent contractor: she brings all cleaning supplies* and tools, and does not work per hour; she does not "clock-in" in the usual sense and she leaves when the place is cleaned as defined in our original agreement and she is paid a fixed amount.
I don't concern myself with her wages, withholding such as FICA, etc just as I don't concern my self with the same similar with my lawn and landscaping service or the company that replaced my roof shingles. My homeowners policy has clause specifically covering such people working on my property.
*although she does use our kitchen trash bags and our smaller trash bags for the bathrooms.
Similarly, I don't concern myself with the "independent contractors" I use in Flushing who also supply their own "cleaning supplies" and, ahem,"tools" for the job, (although I bring my own condoms) and they are paid not by the hour but to get the job done.
