You could also have a trusted friend or confidant if you’re afraid to call with a blocked number call back the exact number that said New York City Police Department. See if that number goes direct to the detectives or to Domestic Violence. Sure it could be a spoof call, but it also could be something completely unrelated to this hobby.

They will try and do the phone call thing, for one it's an easy low effort thing.
If you call back then you're more likely to voluntarily come in to answer a few questions, and they can arrange a convenient time for you. Or it might just be something that can be resolved simply enough to get a lead on something else via a phone call.
Could also be that they don't have enough info to do anything formal and are just fishing and it might get them something. This happened with my brother years ago, when the SCPD found out my brother and a person that they had as a suspect in another "serious crime" had a fist fight a few years previously - apparently another person the SCPD was questioning regarding the crime spree brought up the incident between my brother and the suspect; SCPD was hoping my brother might be able to give SCPD info about their suspect. Unfortunately other than my brother stating he was an asshole and the reason for the fist fight on that one occasion, my brother knew nothing about him. The guy (now suspect in another crime) threw the first punch, my brother won and wasn't hurt so he wasn't interested in pursuing charges, or even getting the police involved. However the police were hoping that my brother would have more info about the guy in general which he couldn't help them on.

I got a call way back like this. Let the guy go through a whole pitch about that they had my IP history and that I attempted to contact someone. I said, "sounds about right. But you don't have anything tangible outside of communications which isn't actually a chargeable offense." They said that I'd have to pay a processing fee before coming into the station. The caller ID was also of a station in the Bronx.
I called my local station (which I live down the block from), gave them the name of the officer that called me and that they were threatening some ridiculous charge. The guy on the line chuckled and said not to worry about it and that that particular officer is under investigation by IA.
I got a similar call recently where they immediately greet me with "Sir" in that ridiculous cop tone. I hung up immediately knowing the jig. They called again and I picked up and hung up again. They leave a whole angry text message saying that I wasted one of their gal's time the day before and that they're going to put the cartel out for me. I didn't speak to anyone, just sent out a few texts and called a bunch of unanswered lines.
I replied, "I'll take my former marine sniper friend against your cartel guys any day" and proceeded to tell them that they were a budget side kick henchman and gif bombed the hell out of them.
It's annoying but it's par for the course when we're calling stupid numbers aka the void.
We're fucking around and finding out.
Just have to know when they're bumbling scammers and act gracefully against their dumb attempts.

I got a call from the "police" about 2 years ago, they were very insisting that if i wanted this to go away all I had to do was wait online and pay a fee by credit card. they had the sounds and noises like they were in the precent..
I asked what prescient they were form and told me to look up their number which showed the local precent, at which time i was kind of shitting a brick.
I hung up and called the precent from a different number, and spoke to a detective, with general info of course, she called me back and said nobody from here called me, it was a scam, phew!! then the "Cop" called me back and told me to stop fucking around or they would come pick me up...now i am playing along with them...saying oh please no.... I said I would come to the precent if they told me their badge number, finally they fucked up and said the precent which was in the wrong town....I fucking laughed my ass off on the phone, told him you are a dumb ass and still laughing when i hung up.

No police officer will engage over the phone other than to set up an in person visit, preferably in their house (the precinct that wants you for questioning), just to avoid these types of scams and also because they want to observe your body language if you are the focus of a crime.
Only exception, is that if you got lucky trying to arrange a meeting with a decoy or they also send these out just responding to an ad (but you thought you got ghosted/no response) and didn't meet, the NYPD will sometimes send a you "got lucky" message to scare you from ever trying to arrange future meetings and they do so from an entirely unconnected to any ad cell/text number (again using a burner phone or Google voice service to your advantage with anonymity), see image below.
