Foreign web sites

Firefox as an extension called “Flagfox”. This displays a little flag from the country that the web site is coming from. I’ve noticed that several web sites that hobbyists often visit either are in the Netherlands or Denmark including eros-ny. This could explain why certain web sites like Craig’s List which sends from the good old U S of A, keep getting busted, and why other sites do not. I’m guessing that these overseas web sites have a certain immunity from the law.

the websites are not in those countries you mentioned, it's their hosting service provider. Anyone who has a website can choose an offshore hosting provider. Flagfox doesn't mean shit...it only shows where the server, if you really care about.

How is the location of the web site not the location of the hosting service provider? If selling copy righted music is legal in say, Russia, who will stop me if I move to Moscow, set up a pirated music down load web site? Suppose I choose not to actually move to Moscow, but have some Russian set up and run my rogue web site in Moscow for me?

This brings up many interesting legal issues involving online activities. The hottest one right now is online gambling. If I tried to open a gambling casino in Brooklyn, lets say, the cops would shut me down before I could even break ground to start building the casino. I couldn’t even operate a floating card game.
Online gambling is another matter entirely. Congress managed to “hassle” online gambling only if direct money transactions through banks (American banks?) were involved in the gambling transaction. See the link below.

ok let me explain to you....for ex: eros click on the following link and look for yourself.

Registrant:
Group Kaitu, LLC
248 3rd Street, # 732
Oakland, CA 94607
US

IP Address: 77.245.63.10
IP Location - Netherlands - Webair Internet Development Company Inc

Basically anyone could run a website sitting here in USA and hosting in another country. I don't think the legality is universal and some countries don't even have those laws.

And you don't need to move to moscow to run a website you could do it from here.

I agree with the running of a website and the host being out of country. The problem is with where the profits end up. With a gambling site there is a lot of money changing hands and once that money hits our shores the rules change.

Thanks for this info, then I guess it really doesn't matter where the host server is, the person who owns the web site can still be traced very easily. If this Firefox extension was truly useful it would follow the link "http://whois.domaintools.com/".

Oh wait, this extension does follow the link "http://whois.domaintools.com/", you just have click the center mouse button to see it.

Hushmail is similar in that its mail servers are offshore (not in the US) and hence its appeal.
Duckman, I see that you posted this at 3:12 PM. As it is now only 2:02 PM Eastern Time, this must mean that you must be off shore, some where between here and Europe in a different time zone (exactly how does the time stamping on this bulletin board work?).

well if the person who owns the domain requsted/purchased "domain privacy" then only the registrars details will show up on whois. If you own a website spend the extra money to buy the domain privacy because anyone can get your name address phone no by just looking at whois. I have enabled domain privacy on all my sites. Most of the time if you register a domain, domain privacy is included you just have to turn it on.

In eros case I think Group Kaitu, LLC is just a registered name to run the sites because eros is under darkside productions.

I guess Duckman is posting from his 300 ft yacht about 1,000 miles out in the Atlantic again. I guess moderating a BB on UG must pay great.

I also was wondering for a long time why it's like this? Because I had set eastern as my time zone but i always see posts ahead of time (probably server time?) Now I can't even edit my profile only can cahnge the ***** and pw. Maybe it's because I'm a Mod??

well on the bottom of the site it says "All times are GMT -4. The time now is 03:51 PM."

The bottom of this BB says:

Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.6.8
Copyright ©2000 - 2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.

I assume that vBulletin is simply software that UG runs on it's servers, and is not run on Jelsoft servers, if not could this explain the time differences?

Time is offset GMT -5 the clock on this server is apox 15 mins fast. You need to turn off daylight saving time and be set to eastern time zone than your post and everything else will be synced except for the 15 min offset. UG is hosted on a Unix system server and uses standard time zones.

Wolf, you're a Moderator now? It seems like everyone and his brother are Moderators around here.
