Finding people using Facial Recognition and Social media accounts.

Not hard to get your name if they have your real cell number. Quick google search will show your name attached to your number in most cases, unless your name is not on the bill.

Either case, thank you for sharing the story. Another reason in the bucket why I don't share face pic.

@genius - I took down all my SA photos. I don't need to take down my other photos if the criminals don't have my face as an input. They will scam so many new people because it easy to do now, that I fairly confident that rather than come back to me they will just find their next victim.

@MrJizz I don't want to break any rules on the board. If @Slinky Bender or one of the mods gives me the green light I will share the software.
Good advice on the pictures...I will say that, however my description is something she would not think possible for a fake to recreate and she would know its me. I may have to change that. Kinds stink as it has worked great for me.

This facial recognition stuff is scary. I just found some porn that one of the girls I see in NY was in years ago. Nothing pro, just some webcam stuff. It is a useful tool, but we are now in the age of AI. Less and less will be under the cover of darkness and anonymity.
I personally feel sharing the software is a good idea so we all know what’s out there. It’ll also help fellow mongers ensure the person they’re attempting to meet is real and not some scam.

2 questions:
How did they get your "actual" cell # to text you?
How is your name associated with your "actual" cell phone? (for example only my 1st name is associated with mine)
Nowadays very easy via google search or some provides have extra service where name/address on phone bill show up on when you call/text.. my buddy had this with t-mobile and would show me when girls would call him their full name/address shows up

years back I made the rookie mistake by using actual phone number… as I texted, girl addressed me with name on my phone bill which was different than one I gave her.. quickly realized she probably had same service

just use burner or text app with these grls, makes things much easier

For me once you have my name you can easily find my cell and vice verse. Getting my name was the problem, from there they have my linked-in, facebook, was able to find my wife's facebook etc etc.

The pictures that showed my face were the problem and what led them to everything. Some people have less exposure to that if your picture is posted nowhere.

I didn't get a yeah or nay from mods, so I will give you clues to what I am talking about that would lead you to find the software easily. Mods, please delete if you don't want this here. Do a google search for facial recognition picture search. It is normally one of the first 3 and begins with a Pi

You can go ahead and name the software. Sorry for the delayed answer but I've been meaning to move this conversation out of the SA thread for a while but just haven't gotten around to it.

I guess maybe it depends on the wireless provider. I noticed with my real cell number that my first and last name shows up on people's caller ID.
I never set anything for that to happen or was asked if I would allow that. I know when I first got the account this wasn't the case.
I have Verizon.
I do believe their is a setting on an I phone which will allow your name to be blocked or even changed for caller ID purposes..

I have Verizon also. I just made a test call to my land line and the # came up on caller ID below the only "name" that came up which was WIRELESS CALLER

I don't know what comes up when I call using my burner as I never call my land line or my cell using it. Also no name is assigned to my burner as I bought it for cash. It's been many years since I got it but perhaps I put in a bogus name when I registered it?

So you took down all photos you say; how did you get the photos of you removed from your wife's facebook postings (I assume family photos she posted that include you)?
How im-in-this-photo-and-i-dont-like-it was invented. Having your photo online is one thing,
but having your face tagged with your name, in a solo photo or in a group photo, is much worse wrt
training visual search engines. Group photos also greatly narrow down your likely circles of relatives,
friends, and co-workers, taking you from being 1 in 8 billion people alive to being a likely/maybe 1 in 80.

@billyS you may find the info below helpful.

I don't have a verizon app on my phone.

My verizon account is very old from my business (it is a business account kept after I sold the business and I have some family members on it - comes out to around $30 each which is why I never gave it up.)

Anyway, when I went to the account just now and selected my # under the section:
What User ID changes do you want to make today?

It comes up with:
Wireless number User name Current user ID New user ID

Where
Wireless number is my #
User name is my real name
Current user ID is blank (as in actual blank spaces)
New user ID is an edit box when I can input what I want ( I guess) to be what shows up in Caller ID when call someone

Thank you again for the heads up and the details, and Billy for moving the thread. So you got all this with the Open plan? I've been meaning to research something like this for years but never got around to it, not just because of SA etc (I'n not worried about an SO per se so no direct major concern there but possible remotely indirect for my work) but some curious discussions I've had with friends about this kind of thing especially as related to FB.

Related potential concern: Does anybody know what the recognition site does with the info you provide it and what it tells you? How do we know that's "secure"/"safe"/w/e?

The one I tested is called Primeyes. You can also do a few free searches per day if you want to test it. If you get a couple of decent pictures you can find a lot. Sometimes, you then have to search a picture that comes back in a search, save it and use it as additional inputs. You can also do traditional reverse image searches in say Google with the additional pictures as most girls also know to use unique pictures on SA or other sites.

I didn't spend the money to do deep searches, but it found me in a second using the pics I had posted to SA.

One additional feature of the paid plan is you can have it not have your pics come up in their searches by paying them. Its old school mob tactics moved to the AI age. "You should pay me because you need protection"

Pimeyes, not Primeyes, works well. I put my own recent photo and only one result came up from 16 years ago that doesn't even look like me. I also checked an SA girl and a bunch of "modeling" photos came up that were sort of a turn off.

I just tried too. 2 of 4 were a successful hit. Ones with baseball cap did not. This has been helpful. I am not married, but still don't want people to know. Will adjust account. But if it were to matter, again, I'd say someone lifted it off of a dating site & not me.

Just tried it. Upload a pic I took yesterday.
It came back with one of me and one of some other dude who looks only vaguely like me.
From your point of view the match of a "dude who looks only vaguely like me" is because what your mind uses to recognize faces is different from how F R algorithms work.

The F R algorithms look at geometric ratios such as involving pupil spacing, relation of that to tip of nose, corners mouth and eyes (among other things) to create a face template (see box 4 below). There is no other way to do it in order reduce the amount of data stored and to avoid interfering complications such as beards, mustaches, etc, that can be changed.

So the " dude" that F R found has the same ratios as you. So the process was successful as it did come back with a match for you. You then discriminated between your pic and the "dude" using methods used by your brain.

Just think if this was used by LE to find you — they would search maybe millions of faces and greatly reduce the number that would have to be investigated further by human investigators to just 2 faces.

BTW, notice that when google street view captures people on the sidewalk (or wherever) it purposely blurs the faces to obfuscate the geometric features needed by F R.
