Just be real careful in China, there's a lot of politics involved. Corrupt cops working with escorts can sometimes try to run extortion schemes on foreigners. If you speak the language, I'd suggest trying some of the karaoke bars. Certain hotels will even arrange for escorts to your room depending on where your staying. Take a ferry trip from HK to Macau for some adult fun. I was there in the late 90's, and I never saw prostitution so out in the open.

In Hong Kong, you can just walk the streets and see signs in English that say massage. I good % ofthem are FS places. One place, had incredibly attractive Chinese women out front, trying to bring in the customers. It had a public hot tub that all the guys hung out naked.

There's actually a slew of places to procure the services of an escort. I don't post here much mainly because I tend to be more active in another forum.
Basically you have your options(this is in reference to China, HK, Macao & most SEA[Southeast Asian] countries). When it comes to adult entertainment the Asians really know how to work loopholes, etc... into a normally illegal activity.
1. Massage Parlors - These are places that often have hostesses tending to the customer's needs. It varies within various countries. In HK for example, I know for a fact that HJs' can be hand, additional extras are also available given that you are able to negotiate with the hostess.
2. Fishbowls - Mostly known for it's popularity in Thailand, Macao also has a selection of fishbowls for consumption. The practice is relatively underground but if your looking for them, you can probably find them.
3. Karaoke Bars - These are similar to massage parlours but instead of a body rub, you'll find yourself singing with the hostess. Usually a mamasan will introduce a line-up to the customer and he'll have his pick. Activities and extras YMMV. This is more prevalent in China.
4. Escorts - Certain hotels(especially in heavily tourist destinations), will have someone either call your room or knock on your door to see if your looking for a "masseuse" or companionship. Everything is usually negotiated between yourself and the "masseuse". There are also street walkers or as I like to call them casino walkers, basically wondering the halls of certain heavy traffic tourist attractions(as shown in the footage I had previously posted).
Try and avoid the touts(guys asking if you want lady friends, or trying to sucker you into a massage parlor), they tend to get a cut of your admissions price. This means that the establishments will need to up your rate(which sometimes become rather unfavorable to you).
A good source of information are taxi drivers but as I said before some will get a cut of your entrance fee or rate so keep this in mind. It's preferable to just do some pre-trip research, this way you know what to expect and where to go.
Mongering abroad is one of the top reasons I do not hobby here in the States anymore. So keep in mind it can be rather addictive in some ways. I also feel a false sense of security part-taking overseas.
1. There's no LE busts that can be taken care of with a little "red" money(although I've never encountered a bust overseas).
2. Some establishments have verified STD testing for the girls.
3. There are literally tons more options on which girls to go with.
4. Lower costs.
Certainly I don't want to paint a perfect picture. There are cons to everything, especially when sex is involved.

"safer", is a figurative term. Considering that this is on the premises of an upscale hotel. You can be pretty damn sure that your being monitored by security upstairs. It's just that no one is going to obstruct you.

It all depends on the country and how much competition there is.
Reminiscing about past travels really makes me hate mongering scene in the US even more...
