PEMBERTON – Local police and several other law enforcement agencies raided a strip club Thursday night and charged seven dancers with prostitution, police said.
Pemberton Township Police, State Police, Office of Homeland Security and the special investigations office of the U.S. Air Force took part in the undercover operation, spokesman Lt. Robert Lewandowski said.
Newark residents Irene Pereira, 52, Market St., Lucilene Mendanha, 39, Jabez St., Aurora Gallegos-Sanchez, 38, Elma St., Liede Jesus Souza, 24, Pattison St., Edivaimis Jaronimo Do Prado, 36, and Edniea Jaronimo Do Prado, 24, both of Ferry St. were charged along with Giselle Mora-Jimmenez, 44, Livingston St. in Elizabeth.
The dancers were arrested and charged at Cheeks on South Pemberton Road Thursday night after the females agreed to perform sexual acts for money to undercover officers, Lewandowski said. Lewandowski said the girls solicited the officers for various acts charging around $50 for some. “They set their own prices,” Lewandowski said. “They are independent contractors.”
All of the women are from Brazil and reside in Essex County. All but Pereira were found to not have legal immigration status and will face further hearings U.S. Federal Court, according to police.
The women were transported to Pemberton Township for processing and were jailed on $1,500 bail each, Lewandowski said.
It is the third time in the last three years dancers at the strip club have been charged with prostitution. Several employees were arrested and charged with prostitution and drug possession during a raid on the bar in July 2006. A similar raid led to charges in September 2005 as well, Lewandowski said.
Charges in the earlier arrests are still pending in court, Lewandowski said.
The club opened in July 2005 despite opposition from the township.
The owner of the bar did not respond to a request for comment Friday.
