In LV, there is some pretty heavy advertising directed at japanese tourists; since there gun laws are soo strict over there it's apparently a pretty big attraction for them ( although the places aiming at that market segment appear to be priced significantly higher ).
same thing in Los Angeles

If you really mean a "fully automatic machine gun," then when they said "it's hot" they mean illegal. Fully automatic machine guns are illegal, via Federal law, everywhere in the USA, even past the Vegas airport.
Actually, the Gun Control Act of 1968 (enacted in response to the Robert Kennedy shooting) did not make machine guns illegal in the U.S. What it did was make it illegal to own UNLESS the owner possesses a FFL (federal firearms license), which is fairly easy to get, although the annual license fee is steep in order to stem the number of "kitchen table" gun dealers. It is the individual state's discretion to limit or ban weapons. For example, NJ prohibits the possession of any weapon that can fire a projectile (i.e. handgun, rifle, shotgun, pellet gun, or slingshot) unless you have a permit. In PA, anyone can walk into a gun store and pick up a weapon without a permit. As a matter of fact, PA is a "shall-issue" state, which means that unless you have been convicted of a felony (which under federal law would preclude you from owning a firearm), the state will issue you a permit to carry a concealed weapon. NV just happens to be one of the states (as well as Utah) that doesn't have any additional restrictions outside of the federal ones to the ownership of full auto weapons.

What gets me about these places in Vegas is how easy it is to shoot a fully automatic machine gun. You basically walk in and sign a paper that they are not responsible for anything. You then pick your gun and pay the 30 bucks or 25 with the coupon and they load it for you and hand you the loaded gun. No training or anything. Also one thing I learned is allot that you have heard about shooting machine guns is just not true. Before I tried it the first time everyone told me that it will be hard to hold down and by the end you will be shooting in the air. Not true even with the 45 cal Thompson. Clips in this gun were 50 rounds each and I had no trouble holding it down. If you ever wondered what it feels like to shoot a real machine gun try it in Las Vegas. Most of my friends that go to Vegas for the first time that is one of the things they talk about the most after trying. Do not know of any other place in the country you can do this. Maybe Utah because of the law but not sure.

In California, there are a number of indoor ranges where you can walk in, rent a pistol, by some ammo, and then set up in a lane and begin shooting at targets. Granted, this is not the same as taking an assault rifle and firing it at full auto, but again there is limited, if any, instruction on how to properly handle the firearm. At this one range I used to frequent, they had problems stemming from a rash of despondent people coming in, renting a pistol, and then putting it up to their heads and pulling the trigger. This prompted the city to consider pulling their license to operate. Their way around this was to either require a 2 week waiting period (they had to come in, fill out the paperwork, get their picture taken for an id card, and then come in 2 weeks later before they could rent) or they had to come in with another person (a suicidal person usually won't kill themselves with a "buddy" around).

oh, you mean $30 to just try them out, not buy them...

Okay, I agree that you can pay a few bucks to try out these guns at the store's own range.

When I read your original post on this topic it sure sounded to me like you were saying a person could buy these weapons.

As jseah pointed out, the relevant Federal laws make it a bit difficult to purchase functional fully automatic weapons. But trying them out at the owner's premises -- well, whatever floats your boat...

The sporting enthusiast will enjoy testing their shooting skills at the trap, skeet, and sporting clay fields. The Oasis Gun Club is "state of the art" and has the finest shooting fields in the southwest. Ponds, fields, and cliffs are an example of what awaits you. All stations are automated and designed to throw singles, doubles and reporting pairs. The 10-station sporting clay course launches clay pigeons in the fields, along the lake sides, high, low and crossing to simulate common field hunting situations. We offer guns for rent, shells for sale and all equipment needed to have a fun shoot.

Slinky I hear this is one of the best. It is in Mesquite not Las Vegas. It is about a 40 min drive north east of Vegas. There is also a real good one in Vegas but it's on a base and you must be an active or retired military to use it. Hope this info helps.

I've been to The Gun Store several times (used to live in LA, and would make the hike out to Vegas often), and it amazes me that they can hand a firearm to a person without at least establishing that they know how to operate it properly.

My last time there, one guy in the booth next to me split his hand wide-open because he gripped the .45 he was holding too high, and the slide slit his skin when he let off a round.

Time before that, there was a lady in there shooting and one of the bullets in pistol got caught in the chamber, and she couldn't figure out how to dislodge it. She actually pointed the gun at the ground away from the range, and started pulling on the slide and the frame of the gun. I left after seeing that...

jim,

I had heard about Oasis, but had also heard it was more like 1 1/2 hours away.
You are right Slinky. It has been awhile since I drove out that way. I thought it was closer. I ran it through mapquest now from Caesars to the Oasis ( something I should have done before posting) Mapquest shows it 83.59 miles with a driving time of one hour 27 minutes. The only other place I know of in Las Vegas is The Las Vegas Gun Club. But don't know how nice it is.
