FWIW I've used Windows forever (and DOS and CPM and...) and my thought is now that my next machine will be a Mac. But, I've been saying that for a while and my last purchase was a Windows notebook, sooo.... I really would LIKE to get a Macbook at some point (and maybe a 3G iPhone).

I bought an IMAC 3 months ago & it's been one of my better investments. Obviously much more expensive than your typical PC but well worth it. My main reasons for loving the MAC:
- No viruses
- Hard Drive is built into the monitor (saves space)
- User Friendly (slight learning curve required)
- Hardware looks and feels reliable
- Apple has First Class customer service & training. I've been to three apple stores & received excellent service.

I really think this bears repeating. Maybe its just because I learned most of what I know about computers on PCs, but getting deep inside the Mac OS is really a pain in the ass.
Apple doesn't want you to get deep into their OS, hence the absence of spy wear, worms and viruses. They also only want large, professional software firms like Microsoft, Adobe, and of course, Apple to write software for their computers. This assures that only software of the highest quality gets to run on their computers. This assures that crappy software doesn't make it to Apple computers. This is one reason that Apple computers seem to run better then PC's.

While Microsoft makes RAD development tools like Visual Basic.net and Visual Basic 2008 (free), and tons of documentation and on-line help about the internals of their Windows operating system available to the general public, Apple prefers to provide professional C++ development tools and expensive development help and documentation only. They really don’t want weekend hackers writing amateurish software that may or may not work, crash and infect your computer. While this might seemly limit the amount of software available, it filters out the crap.

Boy are you missed guided. There are hacks and virus targeted towards the MAC os, but because Apple only has about 6 % of the total market share, they are over looked by the hacker community. When thye want to casue havoc they concentrate on the company that has over 90% of the market share. MAC OS is just as vunerable as windows. See this article from earlier this year.

As Apple pentrates the PC market more, there will be attacks against them will increase. Do not be foolish and hide behind your false sense of secuirty. Hackers can get anywhere.

Not rekindle the argument here, but.... I find your some of your claims to be a bit specious.

TRUE:
1) "Hackers can get anywhere.", I will not argue that ANY system can be hacked!

2) No questions hackers focus more on Windows

Possible.. maybe even probable, but unfounded:
"As Apple pentrates the PC market more, there will be attacks against them will increase."

False:
1) "MAC OS is just as vunerable as windows."

There is No question there are vulnerabilities within OS X, but cummon... Windows registry is a NIGHTMARE. Windows is much more vulnerable. Moreover Apple is much more proactive with security updates and more successful (considering the hardware/software connection). OS X is without question more stable and less vulnerable, not to say impenetrable!!

Where else can novice or intermediate users get weekly training on how to use their machines??

I think often the Mac/PC argument is taken up by computer geeks (Mac and PC alike), but we forget... the majority of the end users do not care about ANY of the things we are discussing. They want a seamless experience that they do not need to be tech savvy to have.

Oh I forgot I blasphemed against the religion. Below are some articles that validate the market share opinion: The articles range in years 2005-07. There is foundation to the arguement!!

Here is an advisory regarding two worms/trojans find in the wild targeting Apple. This is at the end of June 2008.

Speaking of an unfouned statement.

Please show me were this is stated by computer industry security specialist.

I know you are an Applephile MR. Coyote, and for full disclosure I do not care much for the bullshit Apple continues to distribute. You can contiue to use Apple all you want, but do not think for a second they are more secure then Windows.

This is the last I will say in this discussion as I do not want to perpetuate this here, Yes, I am an Applephille as you dubbed me, but:

1) much of the evidence you use to reinforce the market share issue are based on misinformation be espoused by Symantec and McCaffe (companies that profits from Malware)

2) Even in ONE of your articles you used that state:

"Although experts give Microsoft credit for greatly improving the security of its Windows operating system over the last few years, most still say Apple has the Seattle software giant beat.

"The Mac OS X has a higher security profile," said Ray Wagner, a vice president at Gartner, a technology research firm. "It's not generating anywhere near the same rate of problems, even on a per capita basis.""

I am not saying OS X is an impenetrable fortress. Apple has security concerns, no doubt. I will give you that perhaps as market share increases, so will attacks... but it does not take away from OS X being more stable and more secure.

I do not drink the Apple Koolaide. I know there are flaws! I know all to well. There are not only software issues, there are hardware issues aswell, but all to often because Apple users espouse this impenetrable OSX mythos, Windows users feel the the need to bash it.

You continue to use your Windows machine and run scan after scan... I will continue to use my Mac and deal with anything that come down the line as it arrives. Until then, I will enjoy my peaceful platform.
