Apple or PC?

Question, I'm in need of a new PC but I was thinking of going the "Apple/MAC" route. I hear only good things about the Apple machines. The only downside that I know about is the cost. Anyone have any experience with this?

I have always preferred Mac's myself, but I am long past arguing about which is better. The truth of the matter is there is very little you can do on one that you can't do on the other, and most people tend to prefer whatever they first learned.

That said, if you can afford the Mac, then you can't go wrong with it, because if you find out you don't like it, you can always run windows on it.

Macs do cost more. I like them much better than PCs. That said, there are some apps that are only available for PC and some files etc off the net are much more difficult (or even impossible) to view or use without software that is not written for only PCs. There are apps (I can't remember the name) that allow windows to run on top of the Linux based Mac OS.

It really depends on what you use your computer for. I've used both extensively and like PCs for the business end, and MACs for the creative.

It also depends on your patience. First of all, your patience with learning to do something a little different. Second, your patience with Machines - Macs crash a lot less (IMHO).

For 95% of home computer users Macs are better. They crash less, fewer bugs and are easier to use (once you get past the differences) They are leaps and bounds better for what most home users do, the conceit of the digital hub - pictures, music (recording and listening), movies (watching & creating/editing) - that is what consumers use computers for. In that realm Apple is far superior.

Word processing, spreadsheet, presentation - you can use Moctosoft Office - it is the same on Mac OR you can use iWork, which I prefer.

All things being equal, the mac is the better machine for consumers. It us also making huge strides into enterprise.

I'll be repeating what some have said already, but:

When it comes to cost PC's win hands down. Just no question about it in my opinion.

When it comes to stability it's not as simple as some make it out to be. It really depends on what you do. I've worked on both professionally for many years now, and the Macs start to become as problematic, or worse once you start pushing them the "wrong" way. A big reason people think PC's are inherently more stable is because they're connected to the net all the time and then download cracked software, porn etc. Because there are so many more PC's out there those writing viruses and stuff write them mainly for PC's, so statistically you're more likely to get "attacked" if you're on a PC. But if the market was reversed I'm sure the situation would be too.

When it comes to upgradability PC's win hands down. Macs are relatively inflexible.

Ease of use: well, if you're on a PC now I'd say PC. But all in all I think Macs are a lot easier and more intuitive to work on as long as you don't have to get too deep into the OS.

Quality: Macs seem to be of higher quality, possibly because they look fantastic. But I've seen so many Macs and Apple products in general crap out, or even be faulty upon delivery (or systematically flawed like some laptops) that I don't think they're all that great quality compared to PC's.

So in the end I think you should determine if money is an issue, and what you're going to use it for.

If you have the cash a MAC for sure.

Mac's blows away PC's. Most important... They do not get a virus's.

I bought a mac for my kids, and it is a great machine, I use a PC and have been using PC's since they came out, I am amazed by Mac's, they are such superior machines. It is like comparing a Chevy to a Roll's.

Thanks for the feedback - I'm really leaning towards the mac mainly because of the pluses mentioned in this thread (i.e., no viruses, system stability, etc.). Another question - this may be a stupid question but what about privacy issues? I would share this mac with other family members & I'm concerned about leaving a visible internet trail on recently visited websites (like this one). Will mac allow for separate users to have separate accounts/log ons? I'm in windows XP and we currently have separate accounts.

If it means anything the next version of Windows will be known as Windows 7. Steven Ballimer has described it as being a Micro Kernel operating system. Microsoft insiders have leaked that it will really be a re-skinned version of Windows XP with additional security and eye candy features. This "new" version of Windows could come out as soon as the beginning of new year. Vista is crappy, everyone except Microsoft knew it. By the way, Microsoft has given up it's bid to take over Yahoo, that wasn't going very well either.

So Apple's Mac sales is growing, so what? It actually has very little to do with this conversation.

For large corporations PC's still rule. They're way cheaper, and they're a known entity.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that there's competition, but the graph doesn't really change the reasons for or against recommending a Mac to an individual.

I really think this bears repeating. Maybe its just because I learned most of what I know about computers on PCs, but getting deep inside the Mac OS is really a pain in the ass.

Actually, it is just about which command line structure you are more comfortable with. You get into the Mac OS pretty much the same way as the PC OS. You open a command window.
