Soaring Gas Prices?

#1
Gasoline prices are surging again with summer on the horizon, pushing or even passing $3 a gallon in some places. Meanwhile, drivers aren't expected to ease off on their mileage, sending demand higher than last year.

Gas is 40 percent higher now than it was the same time last year. This does not look too great....will gas hit $4- $5 per gallon this summer???

What's going on here ???

time to give up my suv and get a hybrid i can't keep paying 100 to fill my tank it's crazy i think something will have to break or the mongers will have to start to car pool once or twice a week.

#3
I agree--this is getting ridiculous. I drive a car that gets very good mpg but it still is costing me more than I'd like to be spending. I put a lot of miles on my car every week between work and mongering and it all adds up.

I'm just waiting for the day I see a provider tack on a fuel surcharge to her rate.

I hope all this rhetoric about finding an alternative to middle eastern oil isn't just BS (yeah right, that'll be the day!).

This was e*mailed to me today

It is frightening to think that gas may be at $3.00 a gallon this summer. I
think this guy has a decent idea.

GAS WAR - an idea that WILL work

This was originally sent by a retired Coca Cola executive. It came from one
of his engineer buddies who retired from Halliburton. It's worth your
consideration.

Join the resistance!!!! I hear we are going to hit close to $4.00 a gallon
by next summer and it might go higher!! Want gasoline prices to come down?
We need to take some intelligent, united action.

Phillip Hollsworth offered this good idea. This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than
the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last
April or May!
The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't
continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an
inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. HOWEVER, whoever
thought
of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read on and join with us!

By now you are probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super
cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.79 for regular unleaded in my town.
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to
think
that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50 - $1.75, we need to take
aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace..not
sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers
need to take action . The only way we are going to see the price of gas
come
down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas!
And, we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.

How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we
CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price
war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline
from
the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL.
If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their
prices.
If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and
Mobil gas buyers.

It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep
reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us send it to at least ten
more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x
10 =3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of
people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers.

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each,
then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level
further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all! (If you
don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is
send this to 10 people....

Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am . So
trust me
on this one. How long would all that take? If each of us sends this ******
out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people
could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you!

Acting together, we can make a difference.
If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
I suggest that we NOT buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO
THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN.
THIS CAN REALLY WORK

At least we dont have it as bad as our friends over in Britain and Rome. I was in Rome, Italy several years ago and they pay 3-4 times as much as we do. I heard that in Britain, motorists pay $8 to $9 per gallon!

As for the previous post regarding not buying gasoline from Exxon/Mobil, I dont think that would work, but I dont buy gasoline from those stations anyway.

Exxon was the number one profit making company in the US last year with over $30 billion in profits for the year. Isn't that a little excessive considering all that went on in 2005?

Actually, that is over $100,000,000 million PER DAY !!!

Sometimes, boycotts can be quite effective !!!

The funny thing is the news media keeps reporting that $3.00 gas is likely this summer. Question is ...have they been to the gas station recently??
It's already over $ 3 in some places.

Sorry to say...but I think it will break $4.00 when the peak driving season arrives.

Sorry Jack...that's a different thread..this is really about economics but putting that aside for the moment...it's really a CONGRESSIONAL MATTER ! The fact is they have been silent. They would rather work on federal anti-prostitution laws than approach major problems. The fact is they are just plain scared to go after BIG OIL ...too much PAC money involved to go after Big OIL when they really need to grab the bull by the horns and pass some interim legistlation . Just my 2 cents.

I bet there are not a lot of Hummers and big SUV's there either. Their governments took the intelligent approach years ago as high taxes on gas to reduce consumption instead on stupid HOV lanes, appeals to drivers common sense etc. Do you think the Brits or Italians have a ton of lobbyists playing games with manufacturers' fleet mileage rates by classifying large passager vehicles as trucks to get around the rules as we do.

You guys sound like a bunch of little kids throwing a temper tantrum until you get your way. When you eat like pigs at a party expect to get a tummy ache.

Get over it and drive smaller, more economical cars.

This is why they call him genius!

I agree with you...Congress needs to change this truck rule IMMEDIATELY !!!

Gas Prices

It's amazing hundreds of thousands protest against being legal or being deported.
What's wrong with America? Let's wake up!! The real reason we can't get anything done about gas prices is we really don't care.
When was the last time two people agreed on where to go get a beer?
We always think someone will get more than us.

We have to start somewhere, let's pick Exxon and Mobile to boycott.
Get gas anywhere else so no one feels slighted. If only half the amount that
protested would boycott these two companies their reserves would build up
and they would not be buying any more crude.
Remember supply and demand if there is no demand, the supply would have to
build up.

Let's start to show the greedy oil companies that we can stick together. Right now they are laughing (at us) all the way to the bank.

If everybody actually did this it would do absolutely nothing to lower the cost of gas. In fact, it would cause prices to rise, as it would effectively cut supply while leaving demand the same.

It's a truly stupid idea.

I guess basic math 101 was not a strong subect for many Americans.
If you go to a store and they stock an item that is over priced and no one buy it. They either get rid of it or lower their price. I have strong doubts that they would raise the price even higher

I think you're right in your first sentence. It's about economics. Supply and demand and the usual market forces.

What do you propose congress do about it? Just take their profits? How many millions of pension funds and 401k plans will be hurt by that? I know mine will.

If you want to blame somebody, blame a booming world economy and OPEC.
