This is an entertaining question.
1st- about the Vile. I have no idea. When you said “repeatingly took hits”, do you mean snorting or smoking? That info would be a big help in identifying the substance. Coke is sold in viles or little bags.... Big bags also (depending on the amount)... Heard from a friend
. I have no clue what poppers are. Hopefully @genius can educate me on how they are taken. Without any knowledge of what Poppers even are, it sounds like a pill thing to me.
Crack (depending on the amount) is sold in baggies or Saran Wrap. Again heard from a friend lol. However if he was smoking from this “vile” it’s likely crack... unless of course “poppers” are smoked. Again I’ll defer to @genius .
But what really had me interested here was that you “walked in on a buddy getting a BJ”... ok... but apparently you stuck around long enough to see him take several hits while getting the BJ.

Anyway, the original poppers were in glass ampules wrapped in cloth sleeves which, when crushed or "popped" in the fingers, releasing the amyl nitrite fumes for inhalation—similar to the way smelling salts are packaged. However, the ones I saw were lying on the ground in an area frequented by gays(I saw them at rest stop on 495 lying on the ground when I stopped to make a phone call—for you younger guys, at one time there used to be black boxes with a handset on them and you put coins in to pay for a phone call). As I recall they were tiny metal cylinders that perhaps could be used multiple times before used up. I somehow remember these being sold at porn shops in Times Square in the 1970's.
