OK, so two day jobs ago, working for a city government (sort of - complicated story) part of my responsibilities include handling all the tech for the chief of security for all the local housing projects. An Ex NYPD detective on early retirement.
SO shows up at work one day. She is in my office speaking with me, and the Chief walks in. Looks at my SO and does a double take. Very awkward silence ensues. He walks back out.
SO looks at me - "he used to be cop, right?"
"yup"
"What precinct?"
"Midtown south, why do you ask?"
<little light bulb goes off in my head>
"OHhhh...<G>"
Amazing how the chief went along with every suggestion I had after that. To bad they let him go after only about 6 months. Seems he did too good of a job, and he pissed off the wrong folks.
