Double Life: Phones

I'm not sure it has been done, but can someone spell out exactly what the dangers are of using your mobile in this regard? What's the worst/second worst/etc could happen?

Ok so someone calls me at a time and place when I don't want to talk to them, I say "wrong number" and discreetly turn off the phone. And I wipe my call log anyway because it slows down the phone sometime. So besides not being paranoid enough, what am I missing?

The wife doing a google search on the phone number, and escort ads showing up. My wife regularly checks on wrong numbers we hget at home, since we're oon the no-call list, she doesn't think we should ever get calls.

Or having her return the call, and having a female answer.

Not sure if I would indulge in p4p if married, but you can send / receive calls from you PC and sipgate also offers a telephone number that you can use. You can receive calls for free, and google voice works out a system where they call you number then calls the other number to effectively allow dial out.

Legend has it, once Google digests Gizmo5 they will completely replace land lines. As it is I use Skype for my home phone.

Ok that totally makes sense. But I'm talking about your own, private, mobile phone. (Everyone has one of those these days, right?) Not trying to be cheeky, I'd just like to know if there is some pitfall I'm not aware of about using your own phone. (I have a pin-code lock on mine so the so can't get it -- she once did and almost ruined the entire phone so that's my excuse!)

It's not just you that you need to protect. It's the rest of us. A friend passed away and his wife found his hobby blackberry, which he didn't have a password on. She spent at least a year harassing all his hobby friends. Women and men. Anyone who was in the phone.

That's just 1 case. Another... Cops bust a girl and take her phone. They then trace the phone numbers of everyone in it, and now you are on their radar.

Locating a smartphone

I heard that if you have a smartphone, someone may be able to locate your whereabouts. Lets say i have my personal phone in my car while i'm hobbying in a location where I'm not really supposed to be. Can someone locate my phone, even if i don't make a call, see where i am and question me regarding why i'm in that location rather than at work?

If so, how do i combat that issue?

Depending on the model, anyone who has access to the phone can install security/tracking software on it. If no one has done that, the police can still get the phone company to track a phone. So the question is, who do you think is tracking you? Your wife, your boss, or LE?

If TV and Movies are to be believed, the only way to prevent that is to take the battery out. Even turning it off isn't good enough.

FYI, I can tell you right now the locations of my wife, sister, mother and brother-in-law, but I am the one who set up their phones for them. If any of them knew my password, they could find me as well.

Can you see the tracking software on the phone? Is there a way to disable location services, or only 911 to access it?

Depends on the phone. I am not familiar with the others. My family is using iPhones and I know how to configure those with "Find my iPhone" and thus how to see if one is configured. But there are other apps that can be installed that do the same thing. You would have to investigate it for your own phone.

It depends on the expertise & resources of who is trying to track you. If it's the cops, or someone with a good private investigator, there is little you can do, without taking the battery out.

Why? Do you have reason to think someone is tracking you? Or are you just being cautious?

You never know. I'd rather be safe than sorry. It's not the cops i'm worried about though.

There is reasonable caution and there is paranoia. If you are really worried, then use a prepay for the hobby, and pull the battery out of your normal cell when you are out and about.

shit...you're sister says hi

what time should i tell your wife to be home?

Why not try a test with your own phone? If you have an online account set up with your (phone) service provider often there will be help as to how to do this when you log in. Then track yourself.

I've been with tons of different cell prov's and some actually let you GPS someone from the account. Others let you configure it so if you GPS someone on your plan then they will know it via text or email. YMMV. Some phones let you turn off GPS, others you have to config from the online dashboard.

I have a few different methods I use. I have several VoiP providers and a PBX on a hosted server. I have about 5 different numbers that cost me $2 each a month. There's an app for Android called Sipdroid. It's a SIP client used to make VoIP calls. With VoIP you can also make your outgoing caller ID whatever you want it to be. LE could probably detect this if they dug deep enough but mongering isn't exactly capital murder. They're not going to bring out forensic IT to catch a bunch of perverts :)
