2 NYC poker rooms raided

#2
Ever since the Post ran a two-page spread a few weeks back describing all these poker rooms, I've been waiting for this to happen. Used to go to the UWS club and they were one of the ones busted. Wonder what LE is going to do with their "member list?" Hopefully nothing since they let all the players go (moneyless) who were there during the raids.

Does anyone else aside from me, feel "funny" about going to an underground poker room vs the casino? I would feel nervous about cheaters and having no recourse if something goes wrong.

A) At least in NYC, the "comunity" is tight enough that if it was even suspected, word would get out pretty quickly and the place would lose all it's business overnite.

B) As opposed to a home game? I think there's less chance, unless you really know everyone involved.

C) I haven't added up numbers, but my guess is that the cost involved is much less than the rake at a casino.

D) A lot of guys spend a lot of time at these places. No way could they get to casinos as often.

Any of these the one I've been thinking of visiting?

(the one you told me about)
I guess we'll have to see this week, but it might be most of the clubs (i.e. which decide to close down voluntarily in the wake of this)

A) Not if the cheaters were good, youwouldnt even know youre getting rooked.

B) I play mostly in home games (twice a month) and yes I really do know the guys well.

C) Learn something new every day, I always thought the rakes are higher at the underground rooms. (just a presumption not based on fact at all, because of the risks involved and because they can charge a higher rake.)

D) Agreed, Geography certainly plays a big factor, Ive only made it to AC twice in the last year. But this the reason why I thought they would rake more in the undergrounds.

(what is the typical rake?)

Which club? I know at least one has closed since then and is considering not re-openning.
Now I am afraid to draw attention to them. The one in the 20s between 5th and Broadway. ****** me if you want more details. You are the only one who can, I presume. :)

The places I've been to felt very professional. Underground, sure, because there are no legal casino's in NYC, but still, not somethign to worry about.

Sort of like going to a high class AMP with great facilities. You don't get the same fear as going to a dive brothel.

And the house deals, at the places I have been to, so not much cheating that can happen.

You can still have plenty of cheating if several (even just two) players are siganling eaching about cards they hold, how to bet, etc.

But at the places I've played, the floor manager is often a pro gambler with a good amount of experince.

rake = zero

You pay for table time (typically about $8 an hour at the 1/2 tables), or in tournements/freezeouts, you pay a single fee (at the place I played the most, the tournements were either $20, $30 or $40 +$10, with the +$10 going to the house; although they also had one's where they kicked in to the prize pool - example: $20 + $10 plus $300 added to prize pool with 47 players yielded $20 X 47 + $300 = $1,240 prize pool).

You mean, like busting agencies or brothels?
One issue about being at a card club and getting busted vs a brothel: so far, they haven't been taking in the customers at either one. But at a brothel, they don't take your money at the bust. At a card club, anything you've got "out there" (in chips), you lose (unless the owners are very caring about getting it back to you, and even then they are going to have to trust you as to how much you had, and be willing to come out of pocket for the reimbursement; how likely is that?).

At a brothel bust if youve paid already and havent busted your nut yet before the raid do you think youll get a refund?

A) It's a lot more likely you'll get a refund, if the places re-opens

B) The chances are a lot less that you've paid and haven't gotten anything in return. At the card club, the chances are much greater that you get fucked (?pun? intended)

more likey, maybe but that's like a 2% chance vs a 5% chance.

From the Times article:

"Only employees of the parlors, however, were arrested. Prosecutors said it was not illegal to play poker in New York State, only to profit from promoting it."

It sounds like you have nothing to worry about from a legal standpoint. The article failed to mention anything about notifying angry spouses.
