Dr Kruszelnicki is not correct with his probability calculation unless the carton he is referring to is a 4 egg carton. His probability calculation would also be correct if he said: the chances of getting four double-yolk eggs in a row from the 1st four eggs picked from a single carton should be (1/1,000) x (1/1,000) x (1/1,000) x (1/1,000), or one in every trillion.

Statistically I get your point. Maybe that's what he meant but it got lost in the editing.

Ok. So it's 5am Monday morning and I am here thinking about double yolks.

So I did what should have been the obvious and googled "stew Leonard's double yolks".

Turns out this is not all that unusual (what probably is all that unusual is a thread on a whoreboard with 45 posts on it discussing double yolks).

So much for the 1:1000 odds of getting double yolks.

ps. just finished another carton from stew's and no double yolks.

The odds might just be still high, but perhaps you got a mislabelled package or as somebody said somebody set it aside for themselves and it found its way back into the production queue.

Bought 2 doz Sunshine Organic Jumbo Cage free eggs from Hmart.
1st doz 1 egg out of 12 had 2 yolks
2nd doz, used 6 eggs today and 6 out of 6 had double yolks.

used 2 more eggs - 4 yolks so now out 8 pulled from the carton all 8 had double yolks. 4 eggs left - stay tuned.

BTW, HMart had doz jumbo free range brown eggs for 3.99
doz jumbo eggs for 2.99

I have a feeling (just seems logical to me) that there is something at play here other random chance.
One side effect of double yolks is that the eggs are larger than normal. So the probabilities stated in above posts, I suspect, are across the whole spectrum of egg sizes with jumbo eggs having the highest probabilities of double yolks and small and medium the lowest.

Those of you guys with a math or science background may refer to Bayes' Theorem where the prior knowledge that adjusts the probability is egg size.
