VCRs no longer being manufactured

The last manufacturer of VCRs ceased production in July although they are still available in the channel. But if you are looking for one to play your old porno tapes, you better snag one before they disappear. I checked prices on eBay and they are getting a hefty premium for the in-demand ones.

I bought a Toshiba VCR/DVD combo device a few years back and looks like it still is sold by Best Buy. You can play VCR tapes (or DVDs) and also can record from the VCR to DVD. Eventually threw it out and all my tapes as I converted those tapes I wanted to keep -mostly family stuff and PBS TV shows.

I just gave away my Sanyo Betacord VT-9100A. This was a Betamax format beast from 1979. It had piano keys and 2 knobs for channel selection (VHF & UHF). This was Sanyo's 2nd generation machine where they added the capability of setting it to record a program - 1 program, no more then 24 hours in advance, and the timer only turned the recorder on. It did not stop at the end of the program, only when the tape ran out.

I actually donated it to Big Brothers / Big Sisters, and I felt sorry for the driver who had to pick it up. It weighed about 50 pounds.

If I remember correctly Beta was considered the superior format to VHS but since Sony kept Beta as proprietary but JVC allowed VHS to be an open format that is what won the war.
