because i am the culmination of the american dream circa 1920 of immigrant grandparents, movies which portray the ethnic experience (esp. in nyc) have a great interest for me. this notion crystallized for me last night when i was watching the jazz singer: neil diamond/laurence olivier version.

no. 2 (of essentially the same ethnocultural background) has a fondness for elia kazan's america america.

i am very interested in how cinema has told the story of, as well as defined and shaped the experience of, other 2 3 4 generation americans . . . east coast and west. i am even more interested in how these kinds of movies are viewed by those who consider themselves (i) outside the immigrant experience and (ii) recent immigrants.

for me one of the best explorations of that subject, however tangentially, was saturday night fever.

if i write a dissertation on this subject (and any of its biblical inferences), i will give credit where credit is due.

grazie a lei,
